Get Involved with American Red Cross

The American Red Cross (ARC) provides compassionate care to those in need in five key service areas: Disaster Relief, Supporting America’s Military Families, Lifesaving Blood, Health and Safety Services, and International Services.

We interviewed Victoria Hong, who has been an ARC volunteer for the past 7 years to give you the scoop!

What is American Red Cross to you?

“Lending a helping hand to all,” which is our goal in every project we carry out, no matter how small it may be.

What Kind of Projects Have You Participated in?

  • Blood drives are pretty big events that happen a few times a year. They are hosted and sponsored by Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center. With just one donation, you could help save more than one life. You can be someone’s hero.
  • I’ve also spent time making Comfort Kits, where we put items like toothbrushes, toothpaste, wash cloths, soaps, and shampoos in kits for Disaster Relief clients.
  • I’ve also participated in “Whales for Tales,” an interactive program for kids that teaches them safe behavior in, on, or around water.
  • One of my favorite activities is Holiday Mail for Heroes. Every November and December, we write and deliver cards to veterans, military, and military families. We send uplifting messages, and give the members of U.S Armed Forces thanks, encouragement, and holiday cheer.

What do you have to say to future volunteers?

“For those who have a proactive attitude and leadership skills, this is a wonderful opportunity. By connecting with other volunteers, you will build life-long friendships, help spread the word about preventing suffering in the face of emergencies, and mobilize power to others. Volunteering with ARC will allow you to develop as a student, civilian, and leader.”
