graduate admissions

For four years, you’ve answered the question, “So, what are your plans for after college?” with the same answer: “More school!” Whether you’re headed to medical school, law school, business school, or another graduate program, you’ve got one big hurdle to clear before you get there, and that’s the application process. Even if you’ve spent your college career preparing for your eventual matriculation to grad school, it can be tricky to convey that accurately on your app. Enter Liz Clearman, The Enrichery’s new graduate admissions director, to guide you on your application journey.

Originally from Houston, Liz attended St. Agnes Academy and Texas A&M University, where she received a BA in Political Science. She went on to get her JD from the University of Houston Law Center, and ultimately become their associate director of admissions. With several years of graduate admissions experience under her belt, Liz is the perfect person to walk you through the process and ensure your application will be successful. What is your background?

I grew up in Houston, went to Texas A&M for college (whoop!), and then graduated from the University of Houston Law Center with my J.D.  Since then, I have been an assistant city attorney, a law school career counselor, and most recently, I spent 7.5 years in the admissions office at the University of Houston Law Center.  I’ve read over 7,000 law school applications!

When is the best time to start thinking about applying to law school?

Most law schools open their applications on or around September 1st, so that summer before is the ideal time.  However – and this is one of a lawyer’s favorite phrases – it depends on the school, what types of programs it offers, and whether it has fall start only or spring start as an option as well.  At The Enrichery, I will help applicants develop a personalized timeline with when they should be taking what steps, deadlines, and other school-specific things they should know.

What is the admissions test to get into law school?

All law schools accept the Law School Admission Test (LSAT), but in the past few years, more and more are accepting the GRE in place of the LSAT, so check with each school to see what their policies are as far as admissions tests.

What is the benefit of having an admissions director guide someone through the law school process, and is it worth it?

Of course, you can do this on your own, but if you’re unfamiliar with the process, or want expert help navigating what can be an extremely overwhelming ordeal, it is hugely beneficial to have someone like me on your side who can talk through school lists, personal statements, resumes, and just give you advice.  I’m here to help and yes, it is definitely worth it in my opinion.  However, if you’re unsure, reach out to us and I can guide you through what we offer and what you’ll get from The Enrichery.

How many law schools are there in Texas?  In the United States?

There are ten law schools in Texas, and 200 in the U.S. that are ABA-accredited and approved.  That’s a LOT!  There are great options in every state.

I’m a “non-traditional” student and have been out of college for some time.  Is law school still a good option for me?

I can tell you without hesitation that there really isn’t such a thing as a non-traditional law student anymore!  Law schools accept people with widely varied backgrounds, of all different ages, and from all walks of life.  You do NOT have to be fresh out of college to attend law school.  I promise!
