Get to Know Makya, Academic Coach

Makya earned her Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of Texas at Dallas, where she built a multidisciplinary foundation in Natural Sciences, Arts and Humanities, and Global Studies with a focus on Public Health. She is currently completing the prerequisites for nursing school with the goal of pursuing a career in global health and education. Makya loves helping students discover that learning can be both exciting and empowering, especially when they are encouraged to ask questions and think creatively. Her favorite part of working with students is watching their confidence grow as they realize what they are capable of accomplishing.

Where Makya Makes an Impact

Makya has worked with students in a variety of educational settings, bringing both classroom experience and hands-on mentorship to every session. She has served as a Children’s Museum Associate at the Austin Thinkery, an after-school tutor for Kids-U in Dallas, a private math and science tutor, and an Undergraduate Physics Teaching Assistant at the University of Texas at Dallas. Beyond tutoring, Makya has demonstrated a passion for leadership and community service as a founding executive member of the Period Project at UT Dallas, a Student Senator, and a Community Advocate with FIEL Houston. These experiences have strengthened her ability to connect with students, foster curiosity, and create engaging learning environments.

Did You Know?

When she’s not working with students, Makya enjoys knitting, crocheting, and creating zines as creative outlets. She also loves experimenting in the kitchen by baking and developing new recipes. One of her favorite college courses was Women in Medieval History, which sparked a lasting interest in exploring unique and lesser-known historical topics. She also enjoys learning through audiobooks and podcasts and is always excited to discover something new.

Makya’s favorite core value is Think Big because she believes curiosity and ambition are the foundation of lifelong learning. She encourages students to dream beyond their current challenges and see possibilities they may not have considered before. For Makya, helping students build confidence starts with inspiring them to ask questions, embrace new ideas, and believe in their own potential. She strives to create an environment where every student feels empowered to grow both academically and personally.
