Significant Changes to UT Austin’s Appeal Process in 2025

University of Texas

The University of Texas at Austin has significantly updated their admissions appeal process, which previously allowed students to submit a formal appeal to UT Austin in hopes of having an admissions decision reconsidered. On their current Appeal page, UT Austin will now only allow students to appeal if they meet any of the following criteria:

  • “Appealing for a late application to be considered on time (for applicants only).
  • Changing your Freshman/Transfer status (for applicants only).
  • Requesting to defer admission to a later semester (for admitted students only).
  • Requesting to reinstate an offer of admission that you previously declined (for admitted students only).
  • Requesting to change a chosen Coordinated Admission Pathway Institution (for CAP students only).”

Additionally, UT Austin has added a “waitlist” option for students who do not receive full admission but would still like to be considered for entrance in the fall of 2025 (these decisions will be released as spots become available, likely through July of 2025 or anytime before the start of the fall semester).

The waitlist process entails submitting a statement with any academic updates of no more than 200 words (additional materials such as new letters of recommendation will not be reviewed). Their waitlist page also states that “Students should only submit one waitlist submission. If you need to change your waitlist form submission, you will need to cancel the original form and resubmit it.”

The University of Texas at Austin has also shared that all Early Action applicants should be receiving their decisions by February 15 and that, “The final decision release on February 15 will include admits, denials, Coordinated Admission Program (CAP) offers and various pathway program decisions.” (source)
