The ISEE is a private school entrance exam administered throughout the United States to assist schools’ admissions decisions for applicants looking to enter grades 2 through 12. The ISEE (or an equivalent test) is required for admission to most Houston-area private schools. At The Enrichery, we believe when it comes to test prep the earlier, the better—and the ISEE is no exception.
The ISEE Evaluates More than Just Knowledge of Content
The ISEE is split into five sections: Quantitative Reasoning, Mathematics Achievement, Verbal Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, and a timed essay. Generally speaking, the “achievement” sections test applicants’ hard skills while the “reasoning” sections measure their ability to apply those skills to broader contexts.
For example, a Mathematics Achievement question on an Upper Level ISEE might ask a student to calculate the value of a sum, but a Quantitative Reasoning question on the same exam might present a complex word problem requiring the student to distinguish between relevant and superfluous detail and, perhaps, apply numerous steps to solve it. Similarly, while the ISEE’s Reading Comprehension section tests students’ ability to interpret a given text, its Verbal Reasoning questions challenge vocabulary retention through synonym recognition and sentence completion drills.
As such, rote memorization alone will not guarantee an applicant’s success on the ISEE. The earlier a student begins preparing for the exam, the more their critical thinking skills, reading stamina, pacing and time management, and familiarity with the standardized exam format will improve.
Vocabulary Development Takes Time
One of the biggest challenges our ISEE students face when preparing for the exam, particularly at the upper and middle levels, is vocabulary retention. This is because the ISEE measures students’ awareness of English words most likely absent from their everyday vernacular.
In order to perform well on the Verbal Reasoning section of the ISEE, therefore, a student must be able to recall the definitions of numerous vocabulary terms, determine through deductive reasoning those definitions with which the student is unfamiliar (via an awareness of prefix, root, and suffix meanings), identify potential synonyms and antonyms, and correctly apply the words to broader contexts. Of course, it takes time to sufficiently develop such skills.
Note: Our Academic Coaches at The Enrichery have found that the students who struggle the least with vocabulary retention on the ISEE are those who have already developed a wide vocabulary through extensive reading, which provides early and consistent exposure to advanced English terminology. No reason is a bad reason to help your child fall in love with reading!
Math Skills Build on One Another
The ISEE math sections often test content students have not yet learned or are just being introduced to in the classroom, and therefore might be familiar to a student conceptually but not practically. Initiating test preparation early provides coaches more time to identify gaps in a student’s content awareness, hone already-learned skills, and exercise that knowledge under pressure and timed conditions.
Note: This process is especially important for students applying to highly competitive private schools.
Earlier Prep Means Less Anxiety
The longer someone takes to familiarize themselves with an important exam, the more likely the exam will feel overwhelming, daunting, and unapproachable. This undoubtedly applies to the ISEE. In contrast, early preparation guarantees quicker familiarity with the test format, greater confidence gained through such familiarity, and a general sense of preparedness as opposed to fear.
Moreover, starting early enables students to better manage their academic, extracurricular, and social responsibilities, preventing burnout and guaranteeing a more balanced daily schedule.
More Time Means Greater Customization
At The Enrichery, students embarking on our ISEE preparation program are asked first to complete a diagnostic exam so that our coaches can determine a baseline score before sessions begin. From there, our program spans 14 weeks, with one 1.5-hour session each week. Students also take mock exams every four sessions in order to track progress, and parents are consistently informed as to the student’s improvement and shortcomings throughout the program.
We know through experience that practice tests are most useful when there’s time to learn from them: time to review errors, adjust teaching strategies, and strengthen areas of weakness.
In addition, we pride ourselves on customizing our one-on-one test preparation sessions to each student. Our coaches and their students make decisions together about strategies, schedules, and score analysis—all in a specific student’s best interest.
Starting ISEE prep early isn’t about piling on the pressure—students deal with enough already. Rather, it’s about preparation, confidence, and empowerment. When students have time to grow while preparing for a test, they perform better and feel better doing it.
The Enrichery offers one-on-one ISEE, dSAT, PSAT, ACT, and STAAR test preparation programs for students of all ages throughout the year. At all levels, our programs implement proven study methods, monthly mock exams, and weekly progress reports. Our trained Academic Coaches cater to your child’s learning styles and individual goals, helping them stay motivated until the very end! Schedule a consultation today to learn more.
